Completed movie of installing the installation

GROUND PREPARATION FOR THE WATER FEATURE INSTALLATION.

The site, where the water feature is to be placed, was marked out in yellow paint. Two site workers then walked around the area with an electomagnetic metre to make sure that there were no electrical cables buried beneath the site.

Once that 'all clear' had been given, a JCB digger made the first scrape into the ground, beginning the excavation for the pond that was to provide that water for the feature. Once the hole for the pond was deep enough, the JCB piled the waste earth around the pond area and then flattened in to dlend in with the surrounding area.

The pond was then lined and left to allow it to fill naturally with rainwater. Because of the dry summer, this took several weeks. After a settling period ( as to allow for any creases in lining to smooth out with the waight of the rain water.)

The following vidio shows the ground preperation though to the instillation of the public intractive water feature.

'Inside Out, Outside In'

Before work could begin, I had to determine where the first boulder would be placed, what other items were needed, where they had to be placed and how i wanted the installation to progress. Then boulders were brought to the site of the installation by a JCB whitch lifted the boulders easily.

There were four of us onsite: two site managers, the JCB driver and myself.

At times, straps had to be placed around boulders to lift them into position. i want the weight of the boulders to displace the items i had onsite, either by crushing, squashing, or partially burying them.

the items i chose to use included plastic containers of various sizes and shapes. These represent manmade objects that use the earth's natural resources, are bought, used and then discarded. Hence we get our rubbish which, if it cannot be recycled, is placed in landfill sites.

There are tins of various shapes and sizes, representing the metals that are being extracted from the earth to be made into items that society demands and which are bought, used and then discarded, some of this material being recycled and some put into landfill sited.

The boulders represent man's transformation of the landscape though mining, drilling and blasting away at the natural resources to obtain building materials.

The final addition to the installation is a wooden log which represents environmental issuses such as deforestation and land clearance, emphasising wasefulness and the destruction of the earth's natural resources.

Rubber pipes are used to draw the water up and pump it around the feature, using a hand pump and a pedal cycle to create environmentally friendly energy, the whole installation thus representing recycling in a manner that is not itself adding to the destrucshion the of the environment.

Mankind's attitude towards the eath must change if we are to halt the rapid decline in natural resources and have a future at all. We must use less and conserve more, recycling as we go.
